We’re excited to announce the general availability of Azure Lasv5 and Laosv5 local storage optimized virtual machines, powered by 5th Generation AMD EPYC™ (“Turin") processors. Designed for data-intensive workloads that demand high local disk capacity, throughput, and I/O performance, these new VM series help customers scale storage-heavy applications with faster compute, substantially greater local NVMe capacity, and higher networking performance.
Lasv5 delivers the right combination of compute, memory, and high-performance local storage for workloads such as storage caching layers, search engines, distributed file systems, big data analytics, relational and NoSQL databases, and data warehousing. Laosv5 provides three times the local storage capacity per vCPU of Lasv5, making it ideal for large-scale caching clusters, distributed databases, big data processing, and other workloads with exceptionally dense local storage requirements.
A new generation of performance and storage scale
Lasv5 and Laosv5 VMs deliver significant improvements over the previous generation Lasv4 and Laosv4 series.
Lasv5 key improvements from previous generation (Lasv4) include:
- 1.3x maximum local storage capacity:
-
- Lasv5-series offers up to 30.7 TB of local storage capacity (compared to 23 TB on Lasv4-series)
- 1.4x maximum local storage performance:
-
- Lasv5-series offers up to 9.6M read IOPS (compared to 6.6M IOPS on Lasv4-series)
- Improved per-vCPU local storage performance:
-
- Lasv5-series offers ~9% improved read IOPS/vCPU (75K compared to 68.7K on Lasv4) and ~36% improved write IOPS/vCPU (37.5K compared to 27.5K on Lasv4)
- 5x maximum network bandwidth:
-
- Lasv5-series offers up to 200 Gbps of network bandwidth (compared to 40 Gbps on Lasv4)
- Two additional large size offerings:
-
- Lasv5-series now offers new 128 and 160 vCPU sizes
- Up to 35% CPU performance improvement compared to equivalent sized Lasv4 VMs
Laosv5 key improvements from previous generation (Laosv4) include:
- 6x maximum local storage capacity:
-
- Laosv5-series offers up to 138 TB of local storage capacity (compared to 23 TB on Laosv4-series)
- 7.3x maximum local storage performance:
-
- Laosv5-series offers up to 20.7M read IOPS (compared to 2.8M IOPS on Laosv4-series)
- Improved per-vCPU local storage performance:
-
- Laosv5-series offers ~19% improved read IOPS/vCPU (107K compared to 90K on Laosv4) and ~49% improved write IOPS/vCPU (53.9K compared to 36K on Laosv4)
- 4x maximum network bandwidth:
-
- Laosv5-series offers up to 200 Gbps of network bandwidth (compared to 50 Gbps on Laosv4)
- Five additional larger size offerings:
-
- Laosv5-series now offers new 48, 64, 96, 128, and 160 vCPU sizes
- Up to 35% CPU performance improvement compared to equivalent sized Laosv4 VMs
Both series use local NVMe SSD storage to deliver high throughput and low latency. Local NVMe SSD encryption is enabled by default and the VMs support NVMe interfaces for remote storage. Customers can also attach Standard SSD, Standard HDD, Premium SSD, Premium SSD v2, and Ultra Disk storage based on regional availability. Remote disk storage is billed separately from the virtual machines.
Built for storage-intensive workloads
Lasv5 offers VM sizes from 2 to 160 vCPUs, 240 GB of local NVMe SSD capacity per vCPU (up to 128 vCPUs) and 8 GiB of memory per vCPU. Lasv5 offers a maximum of 30.7 TB of local storage capacity and 200 Gbps of network bandwidth on the largest size. High-throughput, low-latency local NVMe storage delivers the IOPS and bandwidth needed to reduce storage bottlenecks for data-intensive workloads.
Laosv5 offers VM sizes from 2 to 160 vCPUs, 720 GB of local NVMe SSD capacity per vCPU (up to 128 vCPUs) and 8 GiB of memory per vCPU (up to 128 vCPUs). Laosv5 scales to 138 TB of local NVMe storage and 200Gbps of network bandwidth on the largest size. The series is designed for workloads where very high storage density and aggregate local disk performance are primary requirements.
Customers and partners are seeing strong results
“VAST Data is excited to collaborate with Microsoft on the new Azure Laosv5 instances, providing 138 TB of high-density local NVMe capacity with 200 Gbps networking, powering the most data-intensive AI workloads through the VAST AI OS. VAST has seen an increase of up to 3x over the previous generation Lsv4 instances. Together, VAST AI OS and Azure enable customers to keep compute infrastructure continuously fed with data while extending a consistent, unified data foundation across on-premises and Microsoft Azure.” - Jonsi Steffansson, GM of VAST Cloud
“With Laosv5, Microsoft is giving data-intensive industries exactly what they need: the storage density and throughput to run oil and gas seismic processing, financial quantitative modeling, and genomic sequencing right where the data lives. WEKA looks forward to partnering with Microsoft to bring this capability to our joint Azure customers as they advance data-driven innovation.” - Ajay Singh, Chief Product Officer, WEKA
“In Silk’s testing, the Azure Lasv5 and Laosv5 VMs delivered performance gains of up to 41% over previous generations while maintaining the excellent cost efficiency the L-series is known for. For customers, that means faster, more predictable performance across a wide variety of use cases, from I/O-intensive databases to analytics and AI workloads, at a price point that makes scaling economical.” - Adik Sokolovski, Chief R&D Officer, Silk
“Azure Laosv5 has transformed the infrastructure behind Azure Container Registry’s hyperscale cache. Its high-bandwidth networking and high-performance local NVMe storage enable dramatically faster image distribution for demanding AI workloads, while higher per-node capacity has allowed us to reduce our VM fleet size by more than 60%.” - Bin Du, Principal Software Engineering Lead, Microsoft Azure Container Registry
